September 30, 1982 (2) We're riding our red Fiat 126p at the moment. The car is old so it keeps breaking down all the way. We didn't get any money and we couldn't exchange our own money but we received a ration card which allows to buy food while on "holiday". I brought quite a few silver rings as well so that we can sell them and buy some gas and food. I also have a few dollars that I got from my uncle. October 1st, 1982 We’ve just arrived to Trieste! We have to stay at a paid camping for several days. October 2nd,1982 I've never been so frightened to death like today! We just went out to the street... to analyze a way to cross the green border… and suddenly we heard a loud crush! It was a soldier with a machine gun! Could you believe? I went numb with fear! My sweetheart shouted at the top of his voice to put our hands up and keep silent. Luckily, Stefan can speak German so we broke free! It was a relief to us, because we could have easily got deported! 16
